Women's only club nights
Southsea Badminton Club is proud to provide a dedicated, safe, and social environment for female players from across the Portsmouth community. These sessions are designed to bring women together to enjoy the sport in a supportive atmosphere, whether you are an existing SBC member, or a regular player at another local club, or looking to get back into playing badminton.
Why Women only?
Although women make up over 50% of the population, they are, unfortunately, significantly underrepresented in the numbers of those regularly participating in sport, both in general and specifically in badminton.
There is a growing body of evidence around the barriers to participation that reduce the likelihood of women and girls joining badminton clubs; our Women’s only sessions are designed to overcome these and offer women a safe, friendly and welcoming environment in which to enjoy each other's company and play some great games.
When are the sessions?
These sessions run on an ad-hoc basis and are scheduled as individual events rather than a weekly commitment.
To complement our competitive league season, these nights are primarily held during the summer off-season, though occasional sessions may be scheduled throughout the year.
As we utilize various sports halls across the city to accommodate these events, the venue location will vary. We encourage all participants to check their specific booking ticket for the designated venue and start time before traveling.
Who can attend?
These nights are focused on doubles match play and are open to all female players of an Improver to Advanced standard. While the environment is social and welcoming, these sessions are not suitable for absolute beginners or those requiring formal coaching.
Participants should have a working knowledge of doubles rules, scoring, and court safety—essentially the same criteria required for our Friday Improvers or Wednesday Main Club Nights. While these events are open to the public and players from other clubs, all attendees must register through our booking system prior to the session to ensure a safe and organized evening for everyone.
Funding & Female Leadership
Our Women's-only nights are organized and overseen by our female committee members, ensuring the sessions remain a focused, friendly and comfortable space for all.
We aim to keep these sessions as accessible as possible. Whenever funding is available to encourage women in sport, we provide subsidized entry fees to our players. Please note that these discounted rates are subject to current funding and venue costs, and specific pricing will always be clearly outlined on the event registration page.
