End of season league report - 2025-26

Another league season has come to a close and what a successful one it has been for Southsea Badminton Club!

With six teams competing across the Portsmouth and Havant league, our players once again demonstrated the commitment, teamwork and sportsmanship that make our club such a great place to play.

Across the season, 32 different players represented Southsea, making a total of 208 appearances across our Open, Mixed and Women's teams. The willingness of players to step up, cover for teammates and represent multiple teams ensured that every fixture was fulfilled and that all of our teams remained competitive throughout the year.

League performance

This season produced some excellent results, with four of our teams finishing on the podium!

Open 1 - 2nd place (division 2)

Open 2 - 3rd place (division 3)

Open 3 - 3rd place (division 4)

Mixed 1 - 2nd place

Mixed 2 - 7th place

Women's - 5th place

To have four of six teams finish in the top half of their respective divisions, including two runners-up finishes and two third-place finishes is an excellent achievement and reflects the strength and depth of badminton within the club.

Open 1 and Mixed 1 both enjoyed outstanding campaigns, narrowly missing out on league titles while consistently producing high-quality performances throughout the season.

Open 2 and Open 3 also had impressive seasons, securing 3rd place in their divisions and showing great consistency from start to finish.

The Women's team faced some strong opposition but remained competitive throughout the season, while Mixed 2 demonstrated tremendous resilience despite a challenging division, with players regularly stepping in to ensure fixtures were completed and valuable experience gained for the future.

The Mixed 2 team fielded the largest number of players during the season - 17 different players - highlighting the depth and flexibility within our squad.

Player commitment

A huge thank you to everyone who made themselves available throughout the season. Several players were regular fixtures in their teams and consistently stepped up whenever required.

Special recognition goes out to:

• Nicola Hughes - the club's most active league player making 19 appearances across Mixed 1, Mixed 2, Women's and Open 3!

• Tom Mundy - 14 appearances across Open 1 and Mixed 1

• Nthabiseng (Tabs) Maboshe - 13 appearances across Mixed 2 and Women's

• Alex Upton-Gill and Hayley Cook - both making 11 appearances across multiple teams

• Nicky Puckett - 10 appearances across Women's and Mixed 2

One of the highlights of the season has been the willingness of players to represent multiple teams when required. This flexibility ensured that fixtures were always fulfilled and strengthened the club spirit that SBC is known for.

Looking ahead

With four teams finishing in the top three of their divisions and excellent participation across the club, there is plenty to be proud of this season.

As we look ahead to next season, we hope to build on this year's strong participation, continue developing our squads, and welcoming both returning and new players into the club.
